Class 3A Baseball Title Preview

Who: Metro Christian (29-5) VS Verdigris (30-3)

What: Class 3A State Championship

When: Saturday @ 2PM

Where: Edmond Memorial High School

Last Meeting: Verdigris Won 11-3 On May 14, 2016 (3A Championship Game)

When Verdigris won the state championship over Metro Christian last year, it appeared we could see these two lock up again. Metro Christian returned eight starters from that championship game and Verdigris has been a 3A powerhouse for a decade. The two teams didn’t lock up during the regular season but they did dominate as the two top teams in 3A all season. The Patriots are looking for redemption after last year’s championship loss. Meanwhile, Verdigris is looking to continue their dynasty that has seen them win five of the last six championships in 3A. Metro’s offense has had no problems during the state tournament. They beat their two tourney teams by a combined score of 19-5. Meanwhile, Verdigris has avoided upsets twice with two wins by one run in each game. Metro appears to have the firepower to get the job done on Saturday. However, you can’t overlook the pedigree that Verdigris has.

Tale Of The Tape

Metro Christian Patriots

Ranking: #2

Record: (29-5)

Championships: 1 (2001)

Road To Championship Saturday
Quarterfinals: Beat Chisholm 10-2
Semifinals: Beat Marlow 9-3

The Patriots are led by their two D1 signees, Foster Roy and Brody Gipson. Roy, a pitcher and outfielder has signed with Richmond while Gipson, a pitcher and catcher has signed with ORU. Roy has been dominant on the mound all season for the Patriots. He struck out 17 batters last week to get Metro to the state tourney. Gipson has been steady behind the plate as well.

Verdigris Cardinals

Ranking: #1

Record: (30-3)

Championships: 6 (2002, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016)

Road To Championship Saturday
Quarterfinals: Beat Jones 1-0
Semifinals: Beat Vian 6-5

Verdigris has been one of the more dominant programs during this decade. With five championships in the last six years, not many teams can claim the success that the Cardinals have had during this stretch. Verdigris has been battle tested already in this state tournament. But they won’t shy away from the big stage of Championship Saturday.
