One of the state’s top defensive prospects has made his college decision. Midwest City 2018 linebacker Jalen Redmond has committed to the Sooners after taking a visit to Norman for OU’s “ChampUBBQ” where several of OU’s top targets were in attendance. Redmond is the fifth in-state prospect to commit to the Sooners. He joins fellow defenders Jordan Kelley and Patrick Fields from Union. As well as Putnam City’s Ron Tatum and Westmoore’s Brey Walker.
OKPreps released an updated 2018 Rankings and Redmond was the last prospect ranked in the top ten that hadn’t given a verbal commitment. Redmond earned All State honors a year ago as a junior. It was his first season playing varsity football and he emerged as a star, picking up nearly 15 sacks on the year. Redmond is also a star on the Bombers’ basketball team. He earned the offer from OU after a basketball game back in January. Defensive coordinator Mike Stoops was in the house for Redmond’s game before making the offer.
The news will be a pleasant surprise to Oklahoma fans. Earlier this week, Owasso 2018 safety Josh Proctor announced that he was remaining loyal to his Ohio State commitment, despite a hard push from the Sooners. Earning the commitment from the state’s most disruptive pass rusher will make Sooner fans happy.
Redmond is the 22nd prospect to commit in Oklahoma’s 2018 class. This continues an overwhelming trend that prospects are committing earlier than ever before. Redmond is currently ranked as the top linebacker prospect on the OKPreps Big Board. He’s also rated as the 3rd overall prospect in the OKPreps 2018 Rankings. He joins teammate Morgan Moore as D1 commits for the Bombers. Lineman Morgan Moore committed last month.
