It’s time to update the OKPreps Big Board, taking a look at the top ten players at each position. Continuing today, we’re releasing one position group each day over the next week. We’ll look at the very best quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, offensive and defensive linemen, linebackers, defensive backs and athletes. You can also vote for who you think the best player at each position. Voting will end on August 21st at Noon. The winners will be crowned later that afternoon. Be sure and vote daily for your pick and check back each day as we release a new position group. Today, we continue with a look at the top ten linebackers in Oklahoma.
1) TRACE FORD
2019 – EDMOND SANTA FE
You can make the argument that Edmond Santa Fe’s Trace Ford is a defensive lineman but the truth is he could flourish at either position on defense. Ford emerged this winter as one of the top defenders in the state. One thing that is always mentioned when watching Ford is the quick first step. His quickness makes him nearly impossible to stop.
2) ZACH MARCHESELLI
2019 – BROKEN ARROW
While Trace Ford is somewhat of a “tweener”, Broken Arrow’s Zach Marcheselli is all linebacker. He’s the perfect prototypical linebacker prospect with a great combination of size and speed. However, the thing that impresses us most is his wrestling successes. He’s won three straight state titles in three different weight classes.
3) WILL TAYLOR
2019 – PUTNAM CITY NORTH
Each year, we see prospects emerge that are just waiting to get their chance to shine. Perhaps no prospect fits that description more than Will Taylor from Putnam City North. Taylor could earn himself some big time opportunities with a successful senior season. Physically, there aren’t many other prospects that outshine Taylor.
4) MAHCEL “BUG” JOHNSON
2019 – BOOKER T WASHINGTON
Yet another Booker T Washington Hornet to make the OKPreps Big Board is linebacker Bug Johnson. While Dax Hill gets a lot of the headlines on the Hornet defense, Johnson is an absolute hammer at linebacker. Johnson can fly all over the field and he’s one of the hardest hitters in the state. He comes at you in a hurry and always has bad intentions.
5) TRAE THOMPSON
2019 – UNION
Union’s Trae Thompson is a prospect we love to watch in action. He’s a player that is not afraid to go downhill and hit you all night long. The motor on Thompson doesn’t seem to slow down and that could make up for what might be a lack of the “prototypical” size. Thompson can do a lot because of his versatility.
6) KE’VON CURRY
2019 – JOHN MARSHALL
John Marshall’s Ke’Von Curry was quite impressive when OKPreps saw him this offseason. If he brings that to Friday nights this fall, the Bears might not miss a step as defending champions. Curry could be on the verge of being a breakout star when it comes to the recruiting trail. He has good instincts and can absolutely fly.
7) KEJUAN HAY
2019 – OWASSO
Owasso’s Kejuan Hay might have flown under the radar last year because of guys like Courtre Alexander, Josh Proctor and Wayne Jones roaming around on the Owasso defense. That won’t be the case this fall as Hay will have the opportunity to contribute more. If he brings it on Friday night’s, his recruitment will pick up.
8) JACK BARKLEY
2019 – BISHOP KELLEY
It doesn’t take very long to figure out why Bishop Kelley’s Jack Barkley deserves a spot amongst the best linebackers in Oklahoma. While he isn’t the fastest linebacker prospect on this list, he more than makes up for that with his ability to read an opposing offense and immediately react to make a play.
9) EARENEST GRAYSON III
2019 – JENKS
Similar to a few other prospects, you can make the argument that a more natural fit might be at the next level. However, for now, we have Jenks’ Earenest Grayson III as a linebacker. Physically, Grayson is extremely impressive and the ceiling is very high for where he could end up. Whether it’s at linebacker or another position, is still up in the air.
10) KIERO PETROSS
2019 – BOOKER T WASHINGTON
A player that has a tremendous amount of upside is Booker T Washington’s Kiero Petross. The Hornets have some of the top stars in Oklahoma but they also have some other prospects that should get some of the spotlight. Petross is certainly one of them. If he picks up where he left off last year, he could climb the list quite a bit.
