We’ve reached the halfway point of the 2019 regular season. In another five weeks, we’ll be previewing the playoffs. For now, let’s take a look back at the first five weeks in each class. We’ll take a look at the team to beat, top storylines, surprise teams and top players in each class. Here’s a look at the 4A midseason report.
TEAM TO BEAT
Defending champion Tuttle is off to a 5-0 start and they’ve picked up right where they left off last fall. Despite losing some key pieces, Tuttle brought back the majority of their starters and they haven’t missed a step. The Tigers have now won 19 consecutive games and are the favorites to capture another Class 4A gold ball. Tuttle knows what it takes to get the job done and that could end up helping them in another long playoff run. We’ll see just where this team stacks up on Friday night in a 1 VS 2 battle. They host #2 Bethany on Friday in a state championship rematch.
If you read our Class 5A Midseason Report, you read about how the top storyline there was the unpredictability of the class as it stands right now. It appears to be wide open. That’s not necessarily the case in Class 4A. In fact, you can make the case that it’s quite the opposite. Tuttle is once again the team to beat. Last year’s runner up Bethany is right there with the Tigers. Perennial powers Poteau and Wagoner are both in the conversation once again. We might not get too many surprises when it comes to 4A football this fall.
Out of all the Midseason Reports we publish, and all the surprise teams we talk about, this one is the easiest as the Central Braves are 5-0 and have risen to #6 in the latest 4A rankings. Central has been building to this season and you started to see signs of what kind of potential they had last year. They’re exceeding expectations this season with their dominating start. To go along with the 5-0 start, the Braves are putting up big numbers on the offensive side of the ball. They’re making a district full of perennial powers like Broken Bow and Poteau look over their shoulders.
Easton Francis – Athlete – Poteau
Poteau is one of those usual suspects that are in the Class 4A championship hunt. Leading the way for them is senior standout Easton Francis. The Poteau star has been one of the best players the Pirates have had in recent memory. He’s had a huge impact on this team since he was a sophomore. And had Francis been 100% as a junior, their season might have ended differently. However, Francis has taken his game to another level and is literally impacting the game more than ever before. Poteau is once again a contender and Francis is a big reason why.
