We’ve reached the halfway point of the 2019 regular season. In another five weeks, we’ll be previewing the playoffs. For now, let’s take a look back at the first five weeks in each class. We’ll take a look at the team to beat, top storylines, surprise teams and top players in each class. Here’s a look at the 6A-D2 midseason report.
TEAM TO BEAT
Does this come as a surprise to anyone? No team has dominated 6A-D2 since the split like Bixby. In the five years since the split, Bixby has made it to every single championship game and they’ve captured four championships, including last year. They came into the 2019 season as the team to beat and they’ve only strengthened that claim since the season started. The Spartans put up 77 in their season opener down in Texas. They followed that up by going on the road and beating Jenks by 50. After another 70+ point performance, Bixby opened up district play and beat Sapulpa and Booker T Washington by a combined score of 85-10. Bixby has been lights out in all three phases of the game and are the heavy favorite to repeat as champs.
Bixby-Stillwater Rematch Inevitable?
While Bixby has been making headlines every week with their dominant start, Stillwater has been right there blowing out their opponents. These two met in the state championship game a year ago and as it stands right now, it looks like a rematch for the gold ball is as close to a sure thing as we’ll get. Both teams are averaging over 50 points per game. Neither team has had a game decided by less than 30 points this year. While those numbers might not make it all the way to the playoffs, these two are certainly the heavy favorites to not only make it to the playoffs, but compete for the title.
The Muskogee Roughers have been flying under the radar while most of the attention is on Bixby and Stillwater. That might be right where the Roughers want to be. With all the attention on the other two, Muskogee has put together a very strong start to the 2019 season. Of course, they’ll get their shot at defending champion Bixby later in the season. We’ll have to wait until week ten to see that showdown. However, in the meantime, we’ll see them host Sapulpa this week and Booker T Washington in two weeks. We’ll know how serious this Muskogee team is after that.
Brennan Presley – Wide Receiver/Defensive Back – Bixby
There are some great options when it comes to the top player in 6A-D2 right now. Plenty of players are putting up monster numbers. Bixby has a few great candidates and the same can be said about Muskogee and Stillwater. However, when it comes down to it, Bixby senior Brennan Presley is on the short list for overall player of the year and is one of, if not the most dynamic player in Oklahoma. Presley has had a huge impact in all three phases of the game as Bixby has been dominant to start the 2019 season. Presley has been outstanding the last two seasons but he’s taken his game to another level this year.
