We’ve reached the halfway point of the 2019 regular season. In another five weeks, we’ll be previewing the playoffs. For now, let’s take a look back at the first five weeks in each class. We’ll take a look at the team to beat, top storylines, surprise teams and top players in each class. Here’s a look at the 3A midseason report.

Heritage Hall Chargers
It shouldn’t come as a surprise here as Heritage Hall is the team to beat in 3A football. The Chargers are undefeated, ranked number one and looking to defend their crown from a year ago. The Chargers have passed every test that has been put in front of them early on this season and they’ve looked great doing it. They’ve had to find some new names to replace some offensive production lost to graduation. However, it hasn’t mattered as the defense has emerged as one of the top overall units in the state, regardless of class. Defensively, they’re better than the 2018 title team. And the offense continues to get better. A scary thought for 3A.

Two-Team Race
Speaking of everyone else in Class 3A, we might have some bad news for you. There is a lot of football left to be played and at the end of the day it doesn’t matter what you’ve done in the first five weeks. It’s all about how you finish. However, Heritage Hall and Lincoln Christian have looked like the top two teams from the start of the season and they’ve only strengthened their hold on those top two spots. It appears that the 3A title might go through these two teams. Coincidentally, if each team were to win their district, they would face off in the semifinals and not the championship game.

Lone Grove Longhorns
Without a doubt the surprise team in Class 3A has been Lone Grove and it’s not even really close. The Longhorns are off to a 5-0 start and their offense has been putting up some strong numbers. In the last two seasons combined, Lone Grove went 5-15. They’ve already matched their win total from the last two seasons COMBINED. It’s been a great start for Lone Grove but their toughest test of the season comes this week when they go on the road to face unbeaten Sulphur. They also have another district clash with Plainview coming up in two weeks. Nevertheless, the Longhorns are off to a great start in 2019.

Chase Ricke – Quarterback – Lincoln Christian
We mentioned Lincoln Christian being right there with Heritage Hall as the best teams in Class 3A. Lincoln Christian has been just as impressive, facing a brutal schedule in the first five weeks. Despite facing tough competition, senior quarterback Chase Ricke has been lights out for the Bulldogs. Every week, Ricke has put up big numbers and has been one of the more efficient quarterbacks in the state. It seems like every week, or close to every week, he’s a Player Of The Week candidate after putting up monster numbers Friday night. If Ricke continues this level of play into the playoffs, Lincoln will be tough to stop.
