We miss football. Actually, we miss sports in general. We hope everybody is staying safe, listening to the professionals and doing what’s best. We also want to give a shoutout to all the workers in the medical field, all of the first responders and all of those essential workers! As we said at the top, we miss football. So every Thursday, we’re going to take a look back at some of the state champions from the previous season with a little Throwback Thursday!

We started by taking a look at 6A-D1 and Owasso capturing their second title in three years. A few weeks ago, we drop down to 6A-D2 and throw it back to the Bixby Spartans continuing their dynasty with a fifth state title in six years. Then it was on to 5A as Carl Albert continued their dynasty as well with a fourth consecutive gold ball. Now we look at Class 4A and Poteau capturing their first state title in school history.

Poteau and Weatherford squared off for the gold ball on a sunny Friday afternoon in Edmond. Despite a 1PM start time, both sides of Wantland Stadium were full and we’re pretty sure nobody stuck around in the southeastern town of Poteau. Coming into the game, we expected it to be a slugfest and a defensive battle. It more than lived up to the hype.

Jayden Mankin got Poteau on the scoreboard first but we wouldn’t see much scoring after that. Mankin would score from a few yards out in the first quarter to give Poteau a 6-0 lead. Weatherford had plenty of opportunities in Poteau territory but penalties and big stops from the Pirates kept the Eagles off the scoreboard until the fourth quarter.

In fact, both teams were scoreless in the second and third quarters. The Pirates would add a short field goal at the start of the fourth quarter to make the score 9-0. Weatherford would avoid the shutout and score a touchdown but the Pirate defense was just too much. Poteau would capture their first state title in school history with a 9-7 victory over Weatherford.

Check out all of the highlights from December and hear from head coach Greg Werner, Easton Francis and Jayden Mankin following the win. Be sure to check back every Thursday for another Throwback Thursday post!
