The calendar has flipped to August and it’s time to start looking at the 2020 season. Continuing today, OKPreps will have new content dropping every day, leading up to the start of the 2020 season. Yesterday, we took a look at the new districts and today we highlight what could be the toughest districts in each class. You can check out the complete content schedule at the bottom of the post.

District 1 – Broken Arrow, Edmond Memorial, Edmond Santa Fe, Enid, Jenks, Norman, Westmoore & Yukon
This district was a gauntlet last season and it’s pretty much the same going into 2020. Last year, six teams all had legitimate cases as playoff teams but only four made it. Now, looking at 2020, Broken Arrow, Edmond Santa Fe and Jenks all look like not only district contenders but state contenders. That’s three playoff spots right there. Throw in Norman, Westmoore and Yukon and the battle for that final playoff spot will be intense. Expect another brutal race to the playoffs in 2020.

District 2 – Bartlesville, Bixby, Booker T Washington, Choctaw, Muskogee, Ponca City, Putnam City West & Sand Springs
We’re on the record that 2020 will see the most competitive year in 6A-D2 to date. With Choctaw moving over from District 1, that puts four of the top six teams in 6A-D2 in this district. As we head into the season, this district looks like it’ll be the toughest in 2020. The conversation understandably starts with two-time champion Bixby. Then you have three teams in Booker T Washington, Choctaw and Muskogee who all have unbelievable talent. Making an argument that any of these four teams could win state wouldn’t be too difficult.

District 3 – Bishop Kelley, Coweta, Durant, East Central, Edison, McAlester, Shawnee & Will Rogers
Class 5A has a few challenging districts but 5A-3 takes the crown. The battle for playoff spots will be fun to watch (for fans at least) when these teams take the field. Edison comes in as last year’s district champ. However, Bishop Kelley battled the injury bug to make it to the semifinals. Then you have Coweta and McAlester, who both have very young and talented teams. The future could come sooner rather than later with those two. Not to mention Shawnee is back in Class 5A.

District 2 – Ada, Blanchard, Classen SAS, Cushing, Harrah, John Marshall, Tecumseh & Tuttle
Several new teams are in this district from different classes and it’s made this district one to watch in 2020. Ada drops down from 5A while Blanchard and John Marshall bring stacked rosters up from 3A. Not to mention you have perennial power Tuttle here. Cushing also has a chance to make some noise as well. It will be interesting to see if one of the new teams into the district can navigate the district slate and go into the playoffs as the district champion.

District 4 – Berryhill, Central, Holland Hall, Inola, Jay, Mannford, Verdigris & Vinita
Berryhill has been a regular season powerhouse and that won’t change in 2020. They go into the season as the favorites in this district, but it’ll be interesting to watch unfold. Holland Hall moves up to 3A from 2A and have nearly everyone back with plenty of talent. Verdigris has high expectations with a great mix of youth and experience that could lead them to a big season. New coaches at Mannford and Vinita could turn those programs into playoff teams immediately.

District 2 – Chandler, Crossings Christian, Jones, Kellyville, Meeker, Millwood, Prague & Star Spencer
Class 2A has a few districts that are going to be brutal when it comes to playoff positioning. However, we’re giving District 2 the edge here. The district is headlined by Jones and Millwood, who come in at #2 and #3 respectively in our preseason rankings. Not only will they battle for the district, they could battle for state. Meeker is also representing the district in the preseason rankings. Crossings Christian could make things very interesting as they move up from Class A.

District 2 – Apache, Carnegie, Cordell, Hobart, Hollis, Mangum, Minco & Walters
Alright, full disclosure here, it was tough to pick one district as the toughest district in Class A this year. On paper, the districts in Class A look pretty balanced and none jump off as being as brutal as some of the other classes. However, if we have to narrow it down to just one, we’re going with A-2 right here. Hobart and Apache are both in our preseason rankings and you can never overlook a team like Minco. Again, while it appears pretty balanced, this one will be fun to watch.

District 1 – Balko-Forgan, Canton, Laverne, Seiling, Shattuck & Turpin
Class B overall is going to be fun to watch in 2020 after the district reshuffling. We had several Class C powerhouses moving up, making Class B even more competitive than it already was. However, when you look at the individual districts, we can’t help but look at District 1, headlined by Laverne and Shattuck. And it’s not like Seiling or Turpin are strangers to making some noise in previous seasons. Class B is going to be very fun to watch play out this fall.

District 2 – Fox, Grandfield, Maysville, Mountain View-Gotebo, Paoli, Ryan, Temple & Thackerville
We’ll truly see a new era begin in Class C this season. When you look at the last decade, it was dominated by a few teams, Cherokee, Pond Creek-Hunter and Tipton. All three teams are now in Class B. However, despite those powers moving to Class B, Class C will still be competitive and we’ll see that in District 2. Fox, Ryan and Mountain View-Gotebo are all in the top seven of our preseason rankings. And just like in the other tough districts, the battle for those home playoff games will be fun to watch unfold.
